Can You Watch Irish and International Channels on IPTV?
Yes. An IPTV subscription delivers TV channels over your broadband connection, so the same app can show Irish channels, UK channels and channels from dozens of other countries in one list. This guide explains what an Irish viewer can expect from a channel list, how international and foreign-language packages are organised, and how to find what you want quickly.
Short answer:
- Most IPTV channel lists for Ireland include a dedicated Ireland or UK & IE group with the main Irish channels.
- International channels are grouped by country or language, so you can scroll straight to Polish, Arabic, Indian or other channels.
- What you actually see depends on the app you use (IPTV Smarters, TiviMate, Smart IPTV…), not only on the subscription.
Irish channels
The core Irish channels most viewers look for are the public and commercial broadcasters you also find on Saorview, Ireland’s free-to-air digital TV service:
| Channel | What it shows |
|---|---|
| RTÉ One | News, current affairs, drama, The Late Late Show, major sport |
| RTÉ2 | Sport, entertainment, younger audiences |
| RTÉ News | 24-hour Irish and world news |
| RTÉjr | Children’s programmes |
| TG4 | Irish-language channel, strong GAA and women’s sport coverage |
| Virgin Media One, Two and Three | Entertainment, soaps, news and sport |
| Oireachtas TV | Live coverage of the Dáil and Seanad |
In an IPTV app these channels usually sit in a group called IE, Ireland or UK & IE. Many lists also include an HD version next to the standard version — pick the HD one if your internet is fast enough (see internet speed for IPTV).
Free official alternatives worth knowing
Irish broadcasters also run their own free streaming apps: RTÉ Player, Virgin Media Play and TG4 Player. For many GAA championship matches there is GAAGO, the official GAA and RTÉ streaming service. If you only watch a handful of Irish channels, these are a legal, low-cost option and they work alongside an IPTV subscription on the same device.
UK channels
Because so many households in Ireland have always watched UK television, IPTV lists for Ireland normally include a large UK group: BBC, ITV, Channel 4, Channel 5 and their regional and +1 versions, plus entertainment, documentary and kids’ channels. Look for groups named UK, UK Entertainment, UK Documentaries or UK Kids.
International and foreign-language channels
Ireland is home to large Polish, Lithuanian, Brazilian, Indian, Nigerian, Chinese and Arabic-speaking communities, and international channels are one of the main reasons people choose IPTV. A typical list is organised like this:
- By country — Poland, Lithuania, Romania, Brazil, India, Pakistan, Nigeria, Philippines…
- By language — Arabic, Spanish, Portuguese, Hindi, Urdu…
- By theme — news, movies, kids, music, religious channels
Tips for international viewers:
- Hide the groups you don’t need. In IPTV Smarters and TiviMate you can hide whole categories so your list only shows the countries you watch.
- Create favourites. Add your most-watched channels to a favourites list so they open in two clicks.
- Check the TV guide (EPG). International channels sometimes have a less complete programme guide than Irish and UK channels. Updating the EPG in the app settings usually fixes empty guides.
News channels
For news you will normally find Irish news (RTÉ News), UK news channels and the main international networks such as Al Jazeera English, France 24, DW and Euronews, plus national news channels in many languages. News channels are a good way to test your setup: they broadcast 24/7, so you can check picture quality at any time.
Movies and series in other languages
Besides live TV, most subscriptions include an on-demand library of films and series. In the movies section you can usually filter by language or country, and many titles offer several audio tracks or subtitles. While a film is playing, open the player menu (often the ⋮ or settings icon) and choose Audio or Subtitles. Read more in our guide to on-demand content, recording and parental controls.
Kids, documentaries and special interests
Channel lists are not only about live sport and news. Most include dedicated groups for:
- Kids – cartoons and educational channels, including RTÉjr and UK children’s channels
- Documentaries – nature, history and science
- Music – music video and radio-style channels
- Lifestyle – food, travel, home and fashion
- Religious – Catholic, Christian, Islamic and other faith channels
If you share the TV with children, set a parental PIN on adult or unsuitable categories — it takes one minute in the app settings.
How to find a channel fast
- Use the search button in the Live TV section and type part of the name (for example “RTE” or “TG4”).
- If a channel does not appear, reload the playlist (Settings → Refresh / Update) — lists are updated regularly.
- Still missing? Check our current channel list or contact support with the channel name.
Before you subscribe
Ask yourself which channels you really watch and check them against the provider’s channel list. If you mainly watch Irish free-to-air channels, the free official apps above may already be enough. If you want UK, international and on-demand content in one place on every device, an IPTV subscription is the simpler option — see our plans or read how to choose an IPTV provider in Ireland.
